Another company goes for the kids

A new mobile phone deliberately designed for use by young children under 10 years old has been launched in the UK by Teddyfone Ltd. It designed to look like a teddy bear that we believe will only really appeal to girls under 8 and boys under about 6 or 7 years old. The following statement was made by Sir William Stewart, a previous UK Chief Scientist, at a press conference early in 2005:

"If there are risks, and we think that maybe there are, then the people most likely to be affected are children, and the younger the children, the greater the danger." Sir William Stewart, Chairman of the UK Health Protection Agency, 11/Jan/2005

Sir William said that no children under the age of 9 should have a phone at all, and all children under 16 should only use phones in emergencies or for really short important calls.

The "Teddyfone" is claimed to increase "mobile parenting" and "safety" for children. The Teddyfone has no screen, 4 speed-dial buttons designed to be pre-programmed by parents, a parent activated a "child monitor" option that allows parents to listen to their child's environment, and an SOS button which automatically sends a pre-programmed text message to 3 assigned numbers.

The truth of the matter is there is simply no evidence that mobile communication makes children any safer. If someone kidnaps a child, the first thing to go would be the mobile phone, so even if the child had managed to get out an SOS signal (which could be a false alarm anyway), there is no way that anyone could get to the location of the phone before the kidnappers are long gone.

Simon Holland, co-founder of TeddyFone said in their press release:"Like many others, I was horrified by the Soham murders and saddened by the effect on parenting." It may be news to Simon that Jessica Chapman did have a working phone on her at the start of the Soham tragedy, but it did not help her. It was switched off and thrown into a field.

Don't get us wrong, the safety of your children is of paramount importance, but without any real evidence that having a phone will help, marketing a phone on this premise is extremely misleading and may put your child at greater risk if, as a result, you let them go out to places you wouldn't normally.

SAR values

Image Hosted by The picture above was an experiment done by Dr Om Ghandhi back in 1997. He showed how radiation penetrates the skull of a adult (25%), 10 year old (50%) and a 5 year old (75%). This should of alarm people. The younger the child the deeper the penetration due to the fact their skulls are thinner and still developing.

Teddyfone explain how an average phone has a SAR value of 1.6 W/kg (which is debatable, a quick look here shows 388 different models of phones, of which the average is 0.8 W/kg, 50% of the claimed value), and that the Teddyfone has the "lowest SAR value on the market" (0.2 W/kg), despite the fact that two phones on the list (the Sony Ericsson TZ600 and the Motorola MPX200) are lower, the latter by a whole 40%. Even so, SAR values are very misleading. The SAR value represents the absorption from the phone operating at it's maximum power, whereas in reality phones (especially in areas of good signal) rarely operate anywhere near this level, and can function at as much as 1000 times lower. Far more relevant would be the "average" SAR value for the phone, but due to signal levels and other environmental constraints this is not feasibly measurable, though phones with visible external antennas (unlike the Teddyfone) seem to be better at running at lower power than those with internal antennas.

If they have reduced the SAR by means of lowering the phone's output power, then a side-effect of this will be that the phone may not work in vehicles or low signal areas. For a phone sold primarily on the merit of increased safety this is largely self-defeating.

Blood-brain barrier

There has been some extremely interesting research showing that exposure to the pulsing microwave radiation from mobile phones allows albumin and other toxins to cross the blood brain barrier and damage your brain. The following is an example from a recent study ("Nerve cell damage in mammalian brain after exposure to microwaves from GSM mobile phones.") showing brain cell death in rats who were exposed to mobile phones:

Activist chains himself to an antenna!

Author: Frans van Velden Information about this press article: Activist will chain himself to UMTS (3G) antenna installation fence 27 november 2005 - An activist against UMTS (3G) is ready to chain himself to an antenna installation fence tomorrow morning. He says his group will be satisfied only when UMTS is absolutely banned from the town of Spijkenisse near Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Monday morning operator Orange plans to install three UMTS antennas in a power pylon, about 75 metres from the nearest dwellings. The workers will meet with a crowd of people. "We call them by flyers throughout the neighbourhood", says Bertus van Drongelen. "To help and prevent the installation of these antennas. If the workers do not leave, one of us will chain himself to the fence." The activists prevented the installation before, in October. Alex Swinkels, Bertus van Drongelen and Gerard de Kimpe are not just worried about the UMTS-antennas. They know the permanent radiation of mobile communication can have terrifying health effects. Some time ago they visited the occupants of the top floor of the Marrewijkflat, an apartment building in Spijkenisse. "80 Percent of them have severe health complaints, from insomnia to cancer", says Van Drongelen. On top of the Marrewijkflat are several antennas for mobile communication. The same problems were found at the 5th and 6th floor elswehere. Opposite are antennas for mobile communication, on top of a four story apartment building. "Insomnia, headache, nausea and a general feeling of sickness", the occupants report. Some of them are urinating blood. The physicians and specialists can not find any known disease or abnormality. When the occupants leave the premises, they feel better. Back home the sickness returns. Therefore, the three activists are convinced of the health effects of the radiation. "It is impossible to have a radiation-free town. The problem of radiation pollution is too complex and it is too late to stop the other antennas", says Van Drongelen. "But at least we want a town without UMTS. The citizens have to be made aware of the radiation hazard." According to scientists, the radiation of mobile communication causes toxic effects. The activists concentrate on all UMTS-antennas in Spijkenisse. The town council is behind them. The council decided two weeks ago not to grant new antenna mast permits anymore. Councillor Gerrit van Buuren asked operator Orange to respect the wish of the people and cancel the installation. "We have the right permit and documents, we don't see any reason to stop", says an Orange spokesman. Crime of your employee towards the World Health Organization

For: Director-General Lee Jong-wook World Health Organization Headquarters Avenue Appia 20 1211 Geneva 27 Switzerland Subject: Your urgent interference is needed to investigate a crime of your employee towards the world health Dear Sir, On the 5th of July 2005, it was publically published that your employee, Dr. Michael Repacholi - the person who is responsible for the subject of Cellular Technology health effects evaluation in the world health organization - receives 150,000 dollar a year directly from the cellular phone industry for meetings and travels, this means he broke the rules of the WHO which bar to receive money directly from the industry. In addition Dr. Repacholi is documented to invite power industry representatives in order to review scienctific work and participate actively in evaluating health standards of electromagnetic fields emitted by powerlines. The names of the powerline industry representatives are all documented and all the details described above are attached for you to review. Dr. Repacholi systematically ignored for years many scientific studies with one common ground: all of the studies he ignores are studies of which findings show that the cellular technology is not safe and cannot be freely distributed without a health price for the world population. Dr. Repacholi’s ignoring this, threatens the whole world health as no enemy has ever threatened the world. Dr. Repacholi takes care of the industry’s interests and make the public asleep about the dangers of the technology, proven dangers that were documented in peer reviewed scientific studies. Repacholi’s refusal to guide governments to take the appropriate safety measures cost human lives. Dr. Repacholi was asked to respond to the publication of the money he receives from the industry directly and he did not deny that he receives 150,000 dollars directly from the cellular phone industry- every year. Is it the WHO’s formal policy to cooperate with industry at the public’s expense? If not, why is this case not investigated? You were sent an international petition to remove Dr. Repacholi because he does not serve the public interest. We never received any response from you. Karolinska Institute is one of the key referral institutions for the WHO. That is the reason why we would like to bring to your attention that prof Olle Johansson reported that in Prague conference on electromagnetic sensitivity, Dr. Repacholi distributed disinformation about the acknowledgement of Swedish government in electrosensitivity, and it is not a coincidence that from this conference emerged a recommendation to governments to discourage the public from measuring radiation in their house, this is an active harm to the public because people with high radiation levels in the house are put at risk if they are not taught how to detect it. This is a crime against the public to keep the public ignorant and passive, in order to give the full control to the industry, and to define it is a “scientific” approach. Dr. Repacholi’s connection with industry goes back in years, it is not something new, But it is getting more and more extreme with time at the public expense. The fact that Dr. Repacholi recommends government to DISCOURAGE people from measureing radiation in their house is a good example to the growing extremity. We genuinly hope that the industry’s money doesn’t make other WHO employees blind to public interest, in light of documents that were published lately, which show that tobacco industry and asbestos industry both were very much involved with WHO and managed to prevent stricter actions to protect the public. (documents attached). We are not ready to let it happen again. We are concerned by your lack of response to the published data, because Dr. Repacholi’s evaluation of science is biased. We ask for your urgent interference to investigate conflict of interests of Dr. Repacholi. If we don’t receive your response within the next 2 weeks, we will consider seriously to approach higher or legal channels. Respectfully Robert Rieldlinger Prof Olle Johansson Iris Atzmon Klaus Rodulph BI-OMEGA CI-OMEGA – citizens against radiation imposed on them. Electrical Hypersensitivity (EHS) affects at least 3% of the British population

Free Image Hosting at Powerwatch welcomes the Health Protection Agency Radiation Protection Division's (HPA RPD) release of its long-awaited review "Epidemiology and Management of Electrical Hypersensitivity" by Dr Neil Irvine. We believe that Electrical Hypersensitivity (EHS) affects at least 3% of the British population (maybe 2 million of the 17 million people currently suffering from long-term chronic adverse health problems). It is important that the association between exposure to electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) and ill-health effects is medically recognised so that Doctors can advise appropriate treatments. Sources of EMFs include microwaves radiation from mobile phones, cordless phones and phone masts, powerlines, etc. The current preferred method of treatment is using psychiatric drugs. This is unacceptable. After press articles on 11th and 12th September in the Sunday Times and Daily Mail, the HPA-RPD issued a brief statement: "The report will be a scientific review of the topic of electrosensitivity with a public health perspective. It will not be a definitive statement of policy from the Board of the Health Protection Agency. The Board of the Agency is not in a position to make a decision on whether electrosensitivity is a "medical condition" or not. This is for the medical profession to decide on, on an international basis" HPA-RPD Press Statement, 12th September 2005 It appeared that the HPA were trying to distance themselves from the implications of the report, denying that they have any responsibility for affecting medical policy. An obvious question to ask then is "Did they collaborate with the Department of Health, before the review, or after the results of the review were known? What is the response of the Department of health to the findings?" GPs in other countries have reported dramatic health deterioration in their patients who live near microwave radiation sources. No such work has yet been carried out in the UK, or is even planned as far as we know. Last week, on the 28th October, the HPA published another report on the burden of disease in the UK, that included: "A small percentage of the population may express an increased sensitivity to a range of electric and magnetic fields with symptoms including: skin sensitivity, dizziness, headache and fatigue. This has not been quantified but the symptoms and increased levels of stress and anxiety will contribute to health costs". This is a tacit acknowledgement of the problem of EHS, and its possible implications for an overburdened health service. So, what is being done to investigate it? We hope that Neil Irvine's report has not just turned into a "literature review", as one HPA person suggested, nor has it been "watered down" to come in line with current WHO thinking that EHS is "all in the mind". However, we have been told that "People are just getting paranoid about reported so-called dangers of EMFs and it is this paranoia that is making them ill, not the EMF exposure" and when Mike Repacholi (of WHO's EMF project) was recently reported in New Scientist (10th September 2005, page 14) as saying that "the worst effects of the Chernobyl nuclear accident are mental health problems brought on by too much worry", we do have to wonder what is going on in the minds of the people in charge of investigating these matters. Perhaps a clue could be a sentence, discussing potential future research, from an HPA representative in a paper delivered at the Electrical Hypersensitivity Workshop in Prague, 2004: "An acceptance that EMF has a causal role in ES would have widespread implications for future policy on prevention and management." Maybe the HPA know that the report is going to show EHS to be a real, debilitating health condition that is affecting a significant proportion of the country's population? They are fully aware of the likelihood that the public will want someone to be held accountable, not only for the causation of the problem, but for providing the solution. Is it this accountability that they are trying to avoid? Of course, if the government's Health Protection Agency are unwilling to be accountable for the protection of the UK population's health from the effects of EMFs, who will? Surely that is what the HPA is for?

Dirty Electric Power- $17.5 million court case

Jury awards dairy $17.5 million By Twins Falls Times-News Free Image Hosting at TWIN FALLS -- A local dairy that claimed its cows were harmed by stray electrical currents has been awarded nearly $17.5 million by a 5th District Court jury. The lead attorney for the dairy said that, to his knowledge, the award is among the largest ever in Twin Falls County and is also a record for so-called "stray voltage" cases in the United States. Following a 10-week trial, the 12-member jury Tuesday found that antiquated Idaho Power Co. equipment caused cows at the dairy owned by Mike and Susan Vierstra to become sick and reduced milk production over a period of several years. The jury calculated compensatory damages at $7.49 million and set punitive damages at $10 million. The dairy had sought $8 million in compensatory damages and up to $40 million in punitive damages, said Ken Peterson, a Kansas attorney who represented the Vierstras in the trial. Idaho Power was found to be 85 percent at fault for damages to the dairy, while the jury placed 15 percent of the responsibility on the dairy. Peterson said Wednesday he was pleased with the verdict but thinks the award would have been larger "if we had done a few things differently." He declined to specify what he would do differently, but he said he learned things from the trial that could be applied in other stray voltage lawsuits. "This in an important national issue, because the utilities have not taken care of the rural lines like they should," Peterson said. "They're antiquated, they're outdated, they have unbalanced loads on them, and they present a tremendous threat to the agricultural community. The havoc they raise on all kinds of livestock is just unbelievable. Many farmers have gone broke, and they don't know that's the reason why." Idaho Power indicated that it intends to appeal the verdict. "We're certainly disappointed by the decision in the Vierstra case and surprised by the jury's verdict," company spokeswoman Anne Alenskis said Wednesday. "We're surprised because along with several independent electricians, we investigated the company's facilities that were in issue ... and through those investigations found the company's facilities to be within normal operating standards."

Electrosensitivity is it real or all in their heads?

This just came out in the Toronto Star (November 11 2005). It is an excellent article on electrosensitivity written by Tyler Hamilton who, with his co-author, wrote a series of articles on cell phones that appeared in the Toronto Star this past summer. -magda Toronto Star, Friday November 11, 2005 Distress signals by Tyler Hamilton Nov. 11, 2005. 01:00 AM It started with nausea and vomiting in the morning, followed by insomnia and the annoying sound of clicking in her ears. Marika Bandera, sitting in her east-end Toronto apartment, begins to cry as she recalls how her symptoms gradually got worse over the course of a year. They included everything from shaking hands and blurred vision to burning skin and mild convulsions. Sessions at a sleep clinic, brain scans, an epilepsy test and numerous visits to her family doctor and various specialists in Toronto failed to determine the cause. "They would not listen, they are not hearing their patients," she says. It wasn't until a trip to Europe that a doctor there suggested her symptoms may be related to extreme electrical sensitivity, or ES, a suspected allergic-like reaction to radio and electrical frequencies associated with cellphones, wireless base stations, computer screens, power lines and common household appliances that use electricity. Little is known about the phenomenon of ES or how many people think they have it, but the government of the United Kingdom took a small step last week toward recognizing the controversial condition after its health protection agency released a report calling for more research into sufferers' stories. "The starting point for this review is recognition ... of the need to consider ES in terms other than its etiology (causes), as this position alone is failing to meet the needs of those who consider themselves affected by ES," the report stated. The report emphasized there's no scientifically proven link between symptoms and exposure to electrical and magnetic fields. It's the main reason health agencies in countries such as Canada don't recognize ES. This hasn't stopped Sweden, with an estimated 250,000 suffers, from accepting ES as a physical impairment. Dr. Olle Johansson, associate professor of experimental dermatology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, says residents of some municipalities can get their home "sanitized" from electromagnetic frequencies. Ordinary electricity cables in the home are often replaced with special cables and electric stoves can be changed to natural gas. If the problem persists, roofs and floors can be covered with special wallpaper and paint that can block outside frequencies. Windows can also be fitted with tinfoil. "If these alterations turn out not to be optimal, they have the possibility to rent small cottages in the countryside that the Stockholm municipality owns," says Johansson, who investigates cases of ES. "The municipality also intends to build a village with houses that are specially designed for persons who are electrohypersensitive." In the workplace, Swedish employees can request special computer monitors and lighting fixtures that dramatically cut down frequency emissions. The issue of electrical sensitivity first gained a profile in 2002 when Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, then director-general of the World Health Organization, confirmed in a media report that she banned cellphones from her office because they gave her headaches. Brundtland, a medical doctor and former prime minister of Norway, told the Star during a visit to Toronto late last month that the condition needs to be taken more seriously by health authorities, and that little is known because research to date has focused largely on the potential links between electromagnetic frequencies and more severe illnesses, particularly cancers. "I get headaches and feel terrible when I am in contact with mobile phones, even if I'm not using it but it's 1 or 2 metres away. I can identify it by feeling a mobile phone in a room without knowing it's there," says Brundtland, adding that it may not be life-threatening but can affect quality of life. The U.K. health agency was quick to point out that the conclusions of its review were drawn largely from the study of electromagnetic fields from power lines and electrical appliances, as the widespread use of mobile phones is relatively new. "Similar symptoms have been reported from exposure to radio frequency transmissions and there is some research being carried out in the U.K. on this topic," according to the agency. Acknowledging that the prevalence of ES — also known as electrohypersensitivity — has not been measured in the United Kingdom, it estimates as many as a few people per thousand among the population could be affected. Dr. Magda Havas, a professor of the environmental and resource studies program at Trent University in Peterborough, is one of the few trying to track the condition in Canada. Havas estimates as much as 35 per cent of the population may be suffering from moderate ES, with the severe form Bandera experiences affecting 2 per cent. She speculates that ES may have an association with diseases such as multiple sclerosis and diabetes. "MS and diabetes are both on the increase and I wonder how much of this is due to dirty electricity and our inundation with radio frequency radiation," says Havas, who has experimented with filters that help block what she calls "electropollution." "I have videos of MS patients who walked with a cane and can now walk unassisted after a few days or weeks with the filters." In a church basement in St. Catharines last month, dozens of people gathered to hear Havas talk about ES. It was part of an event organized by the SWEEP Initiative, which stands for "safe wireless electrical and electromagnetic policies." The group, led by Brock University professor David Fancy, was created in the summer as part of a grassroots effort to raise awareness and begin documenting cases of ES in Canada. The hope is that health authorities and politicians will recognize it as a problem. "There is a lot of front-line work happening, as people reach out to those with a variety of symptoms who are having to move out of suburbia and live in the woods," says Fancy, who wears special protective clothing to help block signals. He compares the condition to an allergy that affects certain people in different ways. Other SWEEP members, such as retired police officer Martin Weatherall, former head of legal services at the Toronto Police Association, prefer to think of it like a poison that accumulates in the body. Havas says one of her missions is to engage medical professionals in Canada to help them understand ES. Many of those at the St. Catharines event were doctors, she says. One physician, working at a high-profile Toronto hospital, told the Star she's seeing an increasing number of patients exhibiting unexplainable, often disabling, ES-like symptoms and feels compelled to learn more. But she's afraid to speak openly about it because of skepticism in the medical community, which tends to treat such patients like they're crazy. "They think it's a bunch of hooey," she says, asking that her name be withheld. "But we don't understand everything. We don't know everything. So we have to take these people seriously." Bandera, suspecting that nearby hydro lines and a neighbour's home wireless network may have contributed to her symptoms, moved a few weeks ago to a different apartment, only to find a wireless phone tower nearby. Her symptoms persist, but so does denial from the medical community. "I'm still searching to get well from this," she says, sounding tired and defeated. "People need to be aware that this condition exists." Tyler Hamilton is the Star's technology reporter.

Ericsson and Nokia loose a High Court case in USA – Class action ahead?

Ericsson and Nokia loose a High Court case in USA – Class action ahead? Image Hosted by The Mobile telephone manufactures did not succeed with their Stop-proposal at the American High Court. The Mobile phone manufacturers wanted to put a stop for consumers being able to take out court summons Against them related to health risk from radiation from mobile phones, according to Bloomberg news. The manufacturers behind the proposal were, between others, Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson. The High Court decision opens up for a class action against the mobile phone manufacturers, to go ahead. A group of consumers in Louisiana demands that every mobile phone user be given a headset to lower the radiation. Analysts tells Bloomberg news that the decision can open up for mass actions, by people who have contracted cancer, running into multimillions against the mobile phone manufacturers.

Cell phone class action cases to proceed!

Image Hosted by Canadian Canada's Insurance and Risk Magazine Wireless phone companies deal with radiation-related cases 10/31/2005 Five class-action lawsuits, originally introduced and dismissed in 2004, against wireless telephone companies over radiation emissions will be able to go forward, after the U.S. Supreme Court U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear an appeal by the companies. The lawsuits are seeking money for wireless users to buy a headset or reimburse those who had already had purchased one. The appeal, made by two-dozen defendant manufacturers such as Motorola, Nokia, Nextel Communications, Sprint and Cingular Wireless, challenging the lawsuit which claimed these companies were aware but covered up risks associated to wireless phone is based on the fact that the companies say their handsets are in compliance with federal regulations. The US Federal Communications Commission Federal Communications Commission must approve any device that sends out frequency radiation that is emitted by wireless phones as exposure to high levels can cause adverse health effects from headaches to tumors according to health advocates. The impact of low level radiation exposure is however less clear. The U.S. government however reports that scientific evidence has yet to indicate instances of wireless phone related health problems. If the lawsuits are won, the wireless industry may have to begin to adhere to numerous different emissions requirements imposed by states. In their appeal to the high court the companies said, "this court's intervention is necessary to prevent the balkanisation of network standards ... which will, if uncorrected, undermine the ability of consumers to use an FCC-approved wireless telephone in every state of the union." Currently, one lawsuit is set to commence in federal court whereas the other four lawsuits will be heard in state court.

Mobile phones can affect sleeping brains - but what's it mean?

Image Hosted by Mobile phones can affect sleeping brains - but what's it mean? Mobile phone use can affect a person's brainwaves even when the handset is switched off and the user is asleep, Australian research suggests, admitting they don't know what that means. Neuroscientist Sarah Loughran studied the brainwave patterns of 50 people in the first half hour of sleep after they had been exposed to 30 minutes of mobile phone radiation. In what is believed to be the world's largest study into mobile phone use and sleep quality, she compared those results with the brainwaves of the same people without exposure to mobile phone radiation before bed-time. "The results show that there was an increase in brainwave activity in the first part of sleep, non Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, following mobile phone exposure," said Ms Loughran, a PhD student at Swinburne University's Brain Sciences Institute in Melbourne. "It was an increase in what's known as alpha brainwave activity and, at this stage, we're not entirely sure what that means. "Any adverse health consequences or effects this might have, we're not sure." Nevertheless, Ms Loughran said getting a good night's sleep did not appear to be affected by the mobile phone radiation. "We didn't find any changes in the amount of time it takes to get to sleep or the total time they slept," she said. "It didn't appear to be affecting the overall quality of the person's sleep." The participants in the study were exposed to a standard mobile phone mounted on the right side of their heads for 30 minutes before sleep. The phone was set up to transmit without them having to talk. On another night, the phone was mounted in the same way but it was not actually turned on. In what is called a double blind, crossover study, neither the study participants nor the researchers were aware of which nights the mobile phone was active and when it was not. Ms Loughran said the most interesting finding was that the effect of mobile phone radiation on brainwaves was noticeable even 30 to 40 minutes after the handset had been turned off. Her study was funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council as part of a larger investigation of mobile phone exposure in collaboration with the Australian Centre for Radiofrequency Bio-effects Research. Other research is looking at the effects of mobile phone exposure on reaction times and working memory.

Court victory is a first for cell-phone programmers

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usSharesa Price thought it was just another in a series of sinus infections. Her head and eyes hurt, and she was vomiting. But then Price had a seizure, and a brain scan found something far more troubling. "When I got home, the phone was ringing. It was the doctor's office, and they told me, `Brace yourself. Honey, you have a brain tumor.' I was standing by the refrigerator, and I just collapsed, saying, `no, no, no, it can't be a brain tumor,'" she recalled. After her diagnosis in 1999 and surgery to remove most of the tumor, Price started looking for answers. She became convinced that exposure to radio-frequency radiation on the job, where she programmed cell phones for new customers, had caused the tumor. In May, an administrative law judge who handles worker's compensation claims awarded her $30,000 to pay her medical bills and other expenses. Price may be the first person to convince a judge that her illness was caused by radio-frequency radiation. The decision is unlikely to have widespread repercussions for the cell phone industry, however, because the settlement was small. Price's customers at Advanced Communications Systems in northern California were doctors, firefighters, police departments and security departments for casinos, and she loved her work. She used a cell phone several hours each day, and the room in which she worked contained transmitters that emitted radio-frequency radiation, she said. Price said when she filed a workers comp claim, her boss fired her, eliminating her health insurance. Then she lost the case. The Native American single mother of two daughters was devastated. She turned to Tribal Health, a government health agency for Native Americans, to get anti-seizure medication. "If I hadn't been Indian, I would have died," she said. Her former boss, Dave Bohlen, said that he did not fire Price, that she quit based on her doctor's advice that she not return to work there. Bohlen said he dropped the insurance because she was no longer an employee. He called her worker's comp case "frivolous" and said there was no proof her tumor was caused by working in his small shop. "There's nothing harmful going on here," he said. After Price recovered from brain surgery, she went to the Internet and found researchers studying the biological effects of radio-frequency radiation, and got to know them. "I would call them up and say, `You are absolutely dead on. If a rat could talk, this is what it would say. I'm the human rat.' "Price couldn't find an attorney to take her case until she contacted Carl Hilliard, a semi-retired lawyer and president of the Wireless Consumers Alliance, a California-based consumer-advocacy group. Hilliard volunteered to represent her pro bono and re-filed her workers comp case. Hilliard said his group has represented cell phone users in issues involving poor service, billing problems and misrepresentations by cell phone service providers."We're the ones who filed a case saying federal law does not pre-empt state law [on consumer issues] and won that case four years ago," Hilliard said. Hilliard brought in Dr. Nachman Brautbar, an occupational toxicologist and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, to review Price's medical records. Brautbar has been an expert witness in a number of high-profile cases, including the chromium poisonings from polluted drinking water portrayed in the movie Erin Brockovich.Brautbar reviewed Price's case and wrote a report supporting her claim that the tumor was caused by exposure to radio-frequency radiation."It's not a money issue, suing the company, it's a health and safety issue," said Price, who speaks to school assemblies and classes about the need to use a headset when talking on a cell phone. "We need to explain to people that just like putting on condoms, you have to take this precautionary measure to make the product be as safe as it can be." I have posted this full story because it is a good example of the ignorance of our leaders. What we cannot see, hear, feel or touch is easily dismissed by the population and if it is making the rich, richer even better. Headsets are not the solution either. The radiation travels directly up the wire and into your ear. Air tube headsets are the answer. I urge you to go to and invest in a air tube headset. It is similar to when you are on an airplane. Sound waves travel up the air tube instead of electrical waves.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usTen years ago, the U.S. had 24 million cell phone subscribers, said Joe Farren, a spokesman for CTIA-The Wireless Association, the trade group for the industry. Today, more than 190 million cell phones are in use. To keep up, cell "sites" - towers and antennas mostly - have increased tenfold - from fewer than 18,000 in 1994 to more than 175,000 now. Without additional towers, calls are lost and reception suffers. "Our companies are always running into this conundrum, which is, 'We want cell phone service, but don't put that tower here,'" Farren said. "When you're dealing with communications through the air, you have to have antennas and towers." Cell sites can be a financial boon to those who provide space for them. Cell companies won't discuss rent, but Donohue said companies typically pay $800 to $2,000 per month, depending on location, the size of the tower or antenna, and other factors. That can be a significant amount for a struggling school district or a church with stagnant or declining membership.

I don't know if you've heard, but starting Jan 1, 2006, in some states, you will no longer be able to use a cell phone while driving unless you have a "hands free" adapter. I went to Circuit City and they wanted $50 for a headset with a boom microphone for my cell phone. Having a friend in the cell phone business, I talked with him and was able to come up with an alternative, working through Office Depot. These kits are compatible with any mobile phone and one size fits all. I paid $0.08 each because he bought in quantity. I tried them out on Erickson, Motorola, Nokia and Verizon phones and they worked perfectly. Take a look and let me know if you want one, and forward this to anyone you know who may want one! Electrosensitivity! Is it real?

Image Hosted by This letter is from another blog (link listed below). I find it very interesting and something that needs to be looked at very seriously. 'Electrosensitivity case in London for comments' has been posted to EMFacts Consultancy. ******************************************************* Sadly I am a new sufferer. About 6 weeks ago I suffered some grade of maximum toxicity; Symptoms: *erratic and escalating blood pressure ( I am fit an attaned the gym and eat healthily) *Right eye problems needing glasses, which I have now returned for a refund *right ear sounds *right brain burning sensations *palpitataions *night terrors and insomnia ( I sleep like the proverbial log usually) *right body numbness *vertigo *booming sounds erratically The Local UK GP was concerned that I could be hyper-anxious! So that is as far as I have taken my visits to him. I knew there was something environmentally wrong and I was correct. I moved 8 months ago into a beautiful brand new home backing onto a golf course. Unknbown to me then, there are 12-15 mobile masts across the golf course up to 1.5kms away and these had been bouncing off my rear elevation for 8 months. I work, sleep and cook facing the masts which gives me a 24/7 exposure. The burglar alarm had three room sensors running off microwaves and I had 2 separate DECT phones. A ruthless combination truly enough to cook me well and properly. It is the masts which have caused me most harm. Some nights they emit higher powered rays than others. I have received immense help here in the UK and am widening my net further to find out if there are any other ways I can help myslef and ultimately other sufferers. I have now put my house on the market for sale and hope to move soon. I am unable to function corporately and have not worked for 8 weeks now. I would appreciate any comments people on your list may wish to make. Kind regards Angela Luke North London N20 0NL, UK Email:

What is electromagnetic radiation (EMR); the electromagnetic spectrum; electromagnetic fields (EMFs)?

Image Hosted by (Excerpts and illustrations from Electromagnetic Fields: A Consumer’s Guide to the Issues and How to Protect Ourselves by B. Blake Levitt, Harcourt Brace, 1995. Used by permission of author.) *All links below will open in a new browser window. All documents on this page are PDF files. Electromagnetic radiation is the term used to describe electromagnetic energy radiating away from its source. It is expressed in wavelengths calculated along what is called the electromagnetic spectrum. There are many wavelength magnitudes along the spectrum, which includes everything from the earth’s own natural pulsations, to electric power, to visible light, to cosmic events. The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into ionizing and nonionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation consists of very short wavelengths (like X-rays), which have enough power to knock electrons off their nuclear orbits and therefore can cause permanent damage at the cellular level, such as cancer or genetic mutations. Nonionizing radiation consists of longer wavelengths with generally less power and is considered incapable of knocking electrons off their orbit around the nucleus. Energy is directly related to the inverse of wavelength. The longer the wave, the less energy it creates; the shorter the wave, the more energy it can create. Although less powerful, nonionizing radiation is capable of causing a host of biological effects, so it is far from harmless. The dividing line between ionizing and nonionizing radiation is around visible light. The problem is that visible light covers a wide portion of the spectrum. (Each color, for instance, is a different wavelength.) So no on can say precisely where one form of radiation leaves off and the other begins, but it is thought to be in the lower ultraviolet ranges, or possibly below. Electromagnetic field is the term used to describe electric and magnetic fields. In general, a field is defined as a space in which energy exists. Actually as field is a concept used to describe the influence of something on its surrounding area. Electric fields exist whenever electric charges are present, that is, whenever electricity or electrical equipment is in use. A magnetic field is produced whenever there is electrical current flowing in a conductor or wire. All magnetic fields run perpendicular to electrical current. In other words, while electric current runs in straight lines, magnetic fields surround the line in circular fashion. When the electricity is turned off, there is no magnetic field, although an electric field will still exist to some extent in any wire or conductor. All electromagnetic fields are expressed in wavelengths and move outward at the speed of light – approximately 186,00 miles per second. Both electric and magnetic fields decrease rapidly with distance from the source. Some common consumer products have complex electromagnetic fields. A television screen or the cathode-ray tube on a computer monitor, for instance, plugs into a wall outlet, thereby using electricity in the 50-60 Hz area, then utilizes a broad band of wavelengths that extend all the way up through the visible-light spectrum. At the top ends of the screen’s field, the ionizing band may well be crossed into. EMR Policy Institute FAQ -

Correlation found between mobile phone masts and sleep disturbances

Image Hosted by"We have found that people who are very electrosensitive in the evening, do not sleep well in the night". Prof. dr. Norbert Leitgeb of the Technical University of Graz in Austria told it to a journalist of the Grazer Woche. "This could indicate, that mobile phone masts and other sources of radiofrequent radiation indeed have a negative influence on the well being of many persons." His saying refers just to the result of a pilotstudy, meant to verify the design of a larger investigation to come. Nevertheless the result is spectacular, Leitgeb confirms. Of nine testpersons the more electrosensitive appeared to sleep much better when protected from radiofrequent radiation. Leitgeb does not find this is proof yet. The upcoming research has to confirm the relationship between sleeping quality, electrosensitivity (50 Hz) and the load of radiofrequent radiation by GSM masts, DECT wireless telephones, WLAN wireless networks and other sources. The research will not take place in a laboratory, though at home with twenty people throughout Austria. Results are expected in the beginning of 2006. Causal relationship In an article in the magazine Bioelectromagnetics Leitgeb describes the existence of electrosensitivity. It is proven that some persons have a heightened sensitivity for electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields. "Though there has not been established a causal relationship yet, the symptoms of some persons are thus severe, that they leave their homes and jobs and try to find release in an environment with less 'electromagnetic pollution'. These persons have a serious problem and need to get help. To find proof of a causal relationship is not just a scientific interest, but the problem also has a socio-economic aspect", says Leitgeb. UMTS mobile phone masts In The Netherlands there is a growing stir about the placement of UMTS mobile phone masts. Also the GSM mobile phone masts, DECT wireless telephones and WLAN wireless networks are suspect of causing 'radiofrequent radiation sickness'. A symptom is the heightened electrosensitivity to low frequency electric and magnetic fields (50 Hz), but the sickness also would have other symptoms like sleeping disturbances, palpitations of the heart, high blood pressure, tinglings, concentration and remembrance distortions, dizziness, burning skin, tinnitus, eye problems, lack of energy and many more. In The Netherlands a study by TNO confirmed the correlation of cognitive functional deviations and the radiation of GSM and UMTS. Moreover, the radiation of UMTS appeared to cause tinglings and dizziness. From: And: sources: 1. Grazer Woche, 'Studie: Handymast stört Schlaf' by Dieter Demmelmair 2. Increased risk for a type of benign brain tumor-associated with mobile phones.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usWASHINGTON-A study published in the June issue of the journal Neuroepidemilogy found an increased risk for acoustic neuroma-a type of benign brain tumor-associated with analog mobile phones. The research was conducted by Lennart Hardell of the Department of Oncology at Obrebro University in Sweden, in collaboration with Michael Carlberg and Kjell Hansson Mild. The researchers said the tumor risk was highest for the 15-year-plus latency period, but they cautioned that particular result is based on low numbers, and therefore, must be interpreted with caution. The risk of acoustic neuroma for digital cell-phone subscribers increased significantly only in the five- to 10-year latency period and the biological relevance of the finding is unclear, according to the study. The risk for another type of tumor-known as meningioma-in patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2003 was significantly increased only in the temporal area of the brain and only with increased latency for analog and digital phone use. Hardell was the plaintiff's star expert witness in an $800 million cell phone-brain cancer suit dismissed by a federal court in 2002. The judge ruled scientific evidence linking cell phones to cancer was not strong enough to warrant sending the case to trial. The Hardell-led research group, for their part, said a pattern is beginning to emerge. "This is the third case control study showing a link between significantly increased risk for acoustic neuroma and cellular telephone use," researchers stated. "Regarding meningioma, a somewhat increased risk was found, although the association was not as clear as for acoustic neuroma." Government health officials in the United States and in other countries say research to date does not show an association between cell phones and cancer, but they have called for continued research to address conflicting findings in the scientific literature. Meantime, a handful of health-related suits against wireless firms and industry trade groups are pending in federal and state courts.

Cellphone Radiation from cell towers and children. Safe or Not?

One Reason Children Are at a GREATER RISK is Because Their Skulls Have Not completely Thickened. Below is Radiation Penetration in head of 5 year old child. 75% penetration in a through a child's brain of low level cell phone radiation. Image Hosted by Exposure of young children to EMF may be more detrimental to their health, especially during the development and maturation of the central nervous sytem, immune sytem, and critical organs. A recent survey conducted in the UK shows 87 per cent of 11- to 16-year-olds own mobile phones and 40 per cent of them spend 15 minutes or more talking each day on them. And disturbingly, 70 per cent said they would not change the use of their phone even if advised to by the Government. It's predicted that by the year 2006 there will be over 2 billion cell phone users in the world - 500 million of them will be children. "Malignant brain tumors are the second leading cause of death in children [under age 15] and young adults [under the age of 34]*". We must be alert to how much more our children are getting exposed to, and endangered by, EMF radiation with the constantly advancing technology of our modern world. * Statistic provided by Dr. George Carlo, a leading epidemiologist, was hired by the cell phone industry to prove that cell phones were safe - and HE FAILED! "One by one, alarming signs appeared in Dr. Carlo's research: that cell phones interfere with pacemakers, that developing skulls of children are penetrated deeply by the energy emitted from a cell phone, that the blood brain barrier which prevents invasion of the brain from toxins can be compromised by the cell phone radiation and most startling, that radio frequency radiation creates micronuclei in human blood cells, a type of genetic damage known to be a diagnostic marker for cancer." ~ from Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age by Dr. George Carlo and Martin Schram Go to to find solutions.

As I have pointed out many times in my blog anyone can be bought and unfortunately the National Park Service is proving this point. in Germany and Switzerland thousands and thousands of acres of deforestation occurred during the cold war. Researchers said it was due to acid rain, only one problem, no acid rain in those areas. HMMM. One researcher showed that radar weapons and frequencies from telecommunication systems similar to the current cell tower frequencies caused this problem. He said, the tree's cell membranes would absorb the detrimental fields into their cells and slowly die no matter how how much nutrient rich food they had. I hope his theory is wrong folks. Also, people need to leave their cell phones at home sometimes. We do not need reception on every nook and craney of the earth. This is absurd and ridiculous. The Environmental Protection Agency has determined cell phone towers are safe!!!

Image Hosted by The Environmental Protection Agency has determined that cell phone towers are safe!!?? Wow! It just goes to show that the cell phone industry has a powerful lobby and lots of money. School Board President Larry Mason is in favor of these leases, calling them a, "big moneymaker." They can bring in profits around $90,000 a year. But does any amount of money justify putting school children at risk? The philosophy seems to be: take a pill, do some Chemotherapy, you're only 15 years old, we can fix you. I feel that children should not be getting leukemia and brain cancer at such young ages. The INDEPENDENT STUDIES HAVE NOT BEEN DONE on the effects of these towers on humans. Schoolchildren should NOT be put at risk when there is a question about their safety. Folks, this is reminiscent of high voltage power lines in many school districts. They actually proved that these power lines increased the risk of cancer and leukemia and the courts stepped in to protect the children. Should we allow the telecommunications industry to put these towers in schools when they have not yet been proven safe, when there are studies that bring into question the safety of these towers' effect on living organisms? Does this make any sense to you? These towers are being put up now, as I write, in a neighborhood, church or school district near you and the test results are not good. Cutting the phone cord isn't as popular as predicted

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usJesse Short, a 28-year-old employee with an insurance company, decided not to sign up for a fixed line when she moved to Manhattan four years ago. She figured her cellphone was all she needed for her active lifestyle. Then came the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and cellular networks became so clogged she couldn't call her family. Two years later the same thing happened during a blackout in New York and much of the Northeast. That finally convinced her to get wired. "After the blackout, I needed to use a pay phone," Ms. Short says. "That's when I realized I needed a landline." This article is great for the reason it demonstrates the reason you need land lines and examples why it can be a disadvantage not to have one. Unfortunately, there are none of the negative health effects being brought up in this article as to why cell phones can be dangereous but that is what my blog is for. Childhood cancer in relation to distance from high voltage power lines in England and Wales: a case-control study -- Draper et al. 330 (7503): 1290 -- BMJ

Babies who live near high-voltage power lines are almost twice as likely as others to develop leukemia during childhood, according to the largest study ever to be conducted into the long-standing question. But despite detailed analysis of more then 9000 childhood cases of leukemia over three decades, the Oxford University scientists who led the research say there is still insufficient evidence to establish with any certainty whether the magnetic fields around the cables actually cause some cases of the cancer. Gerald Draper, Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the university's Childhood Cancer Research Group, identified the birth records of children born between 1962 and 1995 who later developed cancer, and mapped the addresses listed on the children's birth certificates against the national electricity grid in England and Wales. The same was done for a control group of children who did not have cancer - each matched to one of the cancer patients for date of birth, sex and birth registration district. Draper found the 9700 children with leukemia - the most common childhood cancer - were 70 per cent more likely than the others to have lived within 200 metres of a high voltage powerline. The link grew weaker the further away from power lines children lived. Among the 20,000 children who developed cancers other than leukemia, there was no extra likelihood of having lived near overhead cables. Despite the findings, Dr Draper was reluctant to suggest power lines might cause leukemia. Magnetic fields from power lines were "the most obvious explanation". But at a distance of 200 metres, these forces were typically lower than other sources of magnetism within the home, such as household electrical wiring and applicances, he said. "We have no satisfactory explanation for our results in terms of causation, and the findings are not supported by convincing laboratory data or any accepted biological mechanism," Dr Draper wrote in the British Medical Journal. Brad Page, chief of the Energy Supply Association of Australia, said Australia uses the same 400, 275 and 132 kilovolt transmission cables considered in the UK research, but it was unclear whether similar proportions of Australian children lived near them. "People should not place themselves in unreasonable proximity to these things," Mr Page said. "My kids aren't going to be guinea pigs."

Image Hosted by "My kids aren't going to be guinea pigs." It can't be said any better than that folks. The wireless industry is probably the largest experiment know to civilization to date. The experimental group is growing by 46,000 cell phone users a day and 1000's of cell phone tower and sites each month. The telecommunications act of 1996 really thought ahead when they enacted the law to make it illegal for towns to barr cell towers based on health concerns. Then you have towns in need of money and when companies come in like Sprint and pay the local library $2,000 per month to place there tower what do you think they say. You get county advisors who say things "The FCC has found no evidence of harm due to cell towers," Meisse said. "We stand behind that it's not harmful to the community. ... We want to provide good service in the area.". These school systems like North Allegheny Intermediate School only 500 feet from the library (not far enough away, they will be affectedby the RF frequencies), while McKnight Elementary and Carson Middle schools are approximately 1,500 feet away (far enough away unless they really power up the tower which they probably will). The three buildings house close to 3,000 students and faculty. They will wish they listended to the parents in the end but for now unfortunatley money will probably win unless the town really stands up and unites. Good Luck. Image Hosted by 100 FOOT METAL MONSTER INVADES SKILL VILLAGE IN PAIA That is what Verizon Wireless would like to see happen with the raising of a 100ft monopole cell tower in Paia right next to a church, school, and residential homes. What will happen to our property values? A well respected real estate broker, who has sold property on the north shore for over 20 years, shared, “The properties close to the cell phone tower in Haiku are harder to sell and people receive substantially less money for them.” What is the reason for this cell tower you ask? According to Verizon’s representatives, we need to have better cellular reception in the airport, in restaurants, in houses. Tourists are not getting the reception they are wanting and Verizon wants to make them happy. Will we, as residents, accept this? According to Paul Fitzgerald, an Electro-Magnetic Frequency Radiation Specialist and concerned Maui Resident, the health concerns of these towers are very real. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 and FCC regulations deprive local municipalities of the power to regulate cellular tower sites on the basis of public health concerns. The TDMA frequency that these towers emit of 8.34 hertz corresponds to frequencies found in the human brain. The Dutch government sponsored experiments showing that people exposed to cell tower signals “experienced dizziness, nervousness, chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness and tingling, weakness, and difficulty concentrating. Mr. Fitzgerald says, “I can show you over 500 pages of documented studies demonstrating negative health effects from cell towers and phones.” For example, four epidemiological studies of microwave and TV towers used as cell-tower proxies were conducted in Sydney, Honolulu and twice in the UK. All showed significantly higher leukemia rates in people living around transmission towers. The Sydney study found childhood leukemia at more than twice the expected rate. Dr. Hocking found children living near three broadcast towers have more than twice the rate of leukemia than children living more than seven miles away.. In New Zealand, cell phone towers are prohibited on school property because of possible health effects: learning disabilities, cancer, leukemia, DNA damage, etc. It is time to stand up as a community and figure out what is most important to us, cell phone reception inside restaurants, buildings, airports, etc. or protecting the health of our families and maintaining the values of our properties. Do we want these towers all over Maui? As a community, let’s discuss the many alternatives available. We are currently forming a coalition of concerned citizens. Cell Phone Towers Days Are Numbered??!!

photo hosting and image hosting by Are cell phone sites and towers days numbered? SRI International, a research firm best known for demonstrating the first computer mouse, says the solution to eliminate some dropped calls is simple: Make cell phones less dependent on cell towers. SRI, which has been developing technology in its labs for almost 60 years, has software that when implemented in a wireless handheld device allows the handset to continue working even when the network is down. The software is embedded in the phone. The signal of the device then jumps from handset to handset -– which must also have the software -– until it reaches its final destination. Sounds interesting folks, what about the health effects of that? Will that make our cell phones more dangerous or less? My guess is more! When a device becomes a transmitter and a receiver it emits and uses more power to function especially when it is having touble getting a signal. These new devices will be exactly that transmitters and receivers. All in all this is still fascinating technology. Wired News: A Call to Drop Cell Phone Towers

Omega-News: Cell phone base stations change brain currents and cause unwellness!!!

Image Hosted by UNWELLNESS! is an understatement. Cell phone base stations change brain waves? Huh, what, did you say? We want our wireless phones, computers and other handy gadgets but at what cost will this be in the future? Let's read some of the results of this study of brainwaves in Austria. Brainwaves, measured by EEG, changed significantly. Afterwards the subjects were asked to describe their experiences. All of them felt unwell during the second phase. They reported symptoms like buzzing in the head, palpitations of the heart, unwellness, lightheadedness, anxiety, breathlessness, respiratory problems, nervousness, agitation, headache, tinnitus, heat sensation and depression. According to the scientists, this is the first worldwide proof of significant changes of the electrical currents in the brain by a cell phone base station at a distance of 80 metres. It has been scientifically established before that the radiation of cell phone base stations leads to unwellness and health complaints. Get one of those cell towers in my back yard! I THINK NOT! Sweet Victory In Sydney, Australia. Cell tower visual impact was under-estimated and rejected!

href="">Image Hosted by A proposal by Telstra to build a mobile phone tower on the western side of Lake Macquarie has been rejected by council, after residents revealed its visual impact had been significantly under-estimated. Councillors last night rejected the 30 metre high tower at Teralba after a long campaign by residents, who conducted their own experiments to determine its impact on local homes. Lake Macquarie Mayor Greg Piper says council surveyors have confirmed that Telstra's original application to council had misrepresented the impact of the tower by about a third. "It's certainly a significant departure and I don't believe it's reasonable for a company the size of Telstra to be so far from the mark in representing visual impact," he said. "That worked greatly against them and the issue of visual amenity is not to be put lightly aside." Source: ABC (Supplied by Tower Sanity Alliance in Sydney)

185 foot cell tower approved in the big apple...

Image Hosted by Actually, it is in Erie County in New York State. Lengthy disputes and debates over a 185 foot cell phone tower being sprung up in Erie County have come to a close. It's all about money folks. The health costs of these towers is going to be devastating in the near future. The pharmaceutical industry will love them. These towers put out frequencies that are similiar to our alpha and delta brain wave frequencies, causing the blood brain barrier to open and let down its defenses. When this happens, dangerous proteins and toxins enter your brain that normally wouldn't. A cell phone puts out 1 to 6 watts of power that when harnessed can cook a hot dog in about 15 minutes. These towers can put out 75 to 100 watts of power per channel and can have up to 100 channels. That's up to 100,000 watts of microwave radiation that could be emitted in your town. These towers transmit up to a 20 square mile radius. I can tell you a 185 foot tower is going to be a powerhouse. Is the little bit of passive residual income someone is being paid in Erie County for this tower really worth the health costs that will be found in the near future? For what, better cell phone reception? Buffalo News - Construction of 185-foot cellular tower is approved
